Grist Hydrators

Grist Hydrators

A grist hydrator, typically an accessory for mash tun. It is on the top of the tank, and it is
used to rapidly hydrate the milled malt by mixed with hot, or sometimes cold water.
A conical hopper can be attached to the top of the hydrator to help the feeding process.

Conical Hoppers
Stainless steel conical hoppers, often paired with a grist hydrator, ease the loading of grain
into a mash tun, or other brewing vessel.

Some customer also like a glass hoppers.

Why do we use a grist hydrator?
1. Hydrator process could be regraded as a pre-mashing process. It can facilitate starch convert
into sugar. As a result, the time for mashing process will be shortened, in the meantime, more
sugar could be extracted, this will increase yield.
2. It can avoid the grist stacking in the mash tun, this will require less energy used for stirring.
3. Reduction of stirring could help to keep whole husk, this will shorten the time for lautering
and make the wort clearer.
4. It can avoid grist contact with dust and air, this will reduce the oxidation.

Note that it is just a supporting process, it couldn’t mix evenly according to the malt-water ratio.
Therefore, the main mixing process needs to be carried out in the mash tun.
