How many kinds of beer fermenters in a microbrewery?

In a microbrewery, there are several types of beer fermenters used to facilitate the fermentation process, where yeast converts the wort into beer. The choice of fermenter depends on the brewery's scale, budget, and the type of beer being produced. Here are some common types of fermenters found in microbreweries equipment:

Beer Conical Fermenter: Conical fermenters are perhaps the most widely used in microbreweries. They have a conical shape, which allows yeast and other sediment to settle at the bottom. This design makes it easier to harvest yeast and facilitates the removal of sediment, resulting in clearer beer. Conical fermenters are available in various sizes to suit different batch volumes.

Cylindrical Fermenter: Cylindrical fermenters are similar to conical fermenters but lack the conical bottom. While they may not be as efficient for yeast harvesting and sediment removal, they are easier to clean and can still produce high-quality beer.

Beer Unitank: A unitank is a versatile fermenter that can be used for both primary and secondary fermentation. It can handle pressure, which is useful for carbonation and closed transfers. Unitanks are popular in breweries that produce a wide range of beer styles and require more flexibility in their fermentation vessels.

Brite Beer Tank: A brite tank (also known as a bright tank or conditioning tank) is not used for primary fermentation. Instead, it is used to hold beer after fermentation to allow conditioning, carbonation, and further clarification. Brite tanks are typically equipped with a carbonation stone to carbonate the beer before packaging.

Open Beer Fermenter: Some breweries, particularly those following traditional brewing methods, use open fermenters. These are large, shallow vessels where the beer is exposed to the open air during fermentation. Open fermentation can impart unique flavors and is commonly used in Belgian Lambic and other wild yeast fermentation styles.

Fermentation Vessel with Cooling Jacket: Many fermenters, regardless of their shape, can come equipped with cooling jackets. These jackets allow the brewer to regulate the fermentation temperature, which is crucial for controlling yeast activity and producing specific beer styles.

It's worth noting that microbreweries may use a combination of these fermenters to accommodate their production needs and the variety of beers they brew. Each type of fermenter has its advantages and is designed to cater to different aspects of the fermentation process.
